Characteristics of Barhout Well

The Barhout Well, known as  the Gate of Hell, is a deep, wide hole located in the Al Mahrah Governorate, southeast of Yemen. The well has been associated with mystery, as a result of:

The immense depth of the well  , and the inaccessibility of its bottom, creates a sense of awesome and the unknown. Estimates of its depth range between 100 and 250 meters, and its diameter between 30 and 50 metres, stimulating the imagination and linking it to religious myths and hell.

The well's composition:  The well features a huge circular crater with steep walls, opening into a deep, dark hole. The bottom cannot be seen from above, which has contributed to the spread of many myths about it  .

The well is believed to be the result of a geological phenomenon, perhaps a landslide or cave collapse,  but there is no conclusive scientific confirmation as to how it formed.

Foul odors and toxic air: Some accounts indicate foul odors  and gaseous emissions from the well, which are interpreted as signs of something supernatural or connected to another world.     .

Myths and Folktales:  Many stories and legends are told about the Barhout Well, some of which relate to jinn and demons, while others make it an entrance to another world.

Difficulty of discovery:  Because of the difficulty of reaching the bottom of the well and the challenges of navigating inside it, this mystery adds a frightening aspect and raises questions about what lies below.                .

Therefore, the Barhout Well is a mysterious and controversial natural phenomenon in Yemen,  surrounded by myths and posing a major challenge to scientists and explorers.

The reason for calling it Barhout Well

There are several interpretations of the name (Barhout) given to the well, including:

Barhout as a place name:  Barhout may be an ancient name for the same place, used before Islam or in early historical periods. This interpretation depends on the fact that the name came before the appearance of any legend or story associated with the well      .

Al-Barhout is a metaphor for extreme depth: Some people connect the name to the word   ( Barhat) or (Barhout), which in some dialects refers to extreme depth or a deep abyss, which is consistent with the nature of the well          .

Antiquity of the well: The name may be associated with ancient times  or great and mysterious things in the past, giving the impression of the well's antiquity and mystery                       .

Bir Barhout line

Barhout Well represents an extreme danger for several reasons, including:

Mysterious internal environment:  Little is known about the environment inside the well, but it is believed that the air lacks oxygen, contains toxic gases, and that unknown organisms may be present.

Lack of tools and technology: The lack of  sufficient technology and tools to safely and comprehensively explore the well increases the risks to anyone attempting to descend into it.

Well design: The well walls  are irregular, which increases the likelihood of landslides, especially given  the lack of clear visibility at the bottom.

Myths and legends: The Barhout Well   is associated with many myths and legends, which increases the fear and dread associated with it, and encourages people to avoid approaching it       .

Therefore, Barhout Well is rich in mystery,  as it is a mixture of mysterious geological phenomena, popular beliefs, and legends that stimulate the imagination and stimulate the desire to discover its secrets.
